The suffering of the children in detention and the long-term implications for their physical and mental health has only one solution: release them and their families now. Enough is enough.

Successive amendments to the Migration Act and the policies behind them which target the refugees and their children are amongst the most regressive and unfair pieces of legislation in Australian history. They are a serious attack upon human rights, the rights of children and the rule of law, and are in contravention of the United Nation conventions to which Australia is a signatory. These shameful policies dishonour Australia.

The Australian Bar Association and the Law Council of Australia have issued a joint statement decrying the Prime Minister’s personal attacks on Human Rights Commissioner Triggs in response to her balanced and well-researched report saying they undermined confidence in our system of justice and human rights protection.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists said the report confirmed what psychiatrists have been saying. “The statistics in this report are extremely alarming. Mental illness in children is generally rare and to have it recorded at such a high level shows extraordinary things are happening.”

We must not be fobbed off by the bullying tactics of uncaring politicians and demand the release of these at-risk children held in unlawful detention, now.
